Broncos notes: McDaniels isn't worried about Orton's scrimmage

THE GAZETTE

If there’s any concern about the Denver Broncos’ quarterback situation or their offense, it isn’t coming from the coach.

Josh McDaniels tried to calm the masses that booed quarterback Kyle Orton during Thursday night’s scrimmage at Invesco Field at Mile High, in which he threw a pair of interceptions and misfired on many other passes.

“Kyle did fine,” McDaniels said Friday, after reviewing the video. “There’s a couple plays, obviously, we could have had back. But he made no more mistakes, certainly, than anybody else did.”

McDaniels said Orton made many good decisions and had many good throws. He acknowledged one deep ball from Orton was underthrown but didn’t blame him for every incompletion.

That raises the question, how is the Broncos offense coming along? McDaniels said he thought the offense was as far along as it could reasonably be, given they started incorporating the complicated scheme only a few months ago.

“It’s encouraging to see a practice (Thursday) night where there’s a bunch of mistakes, but see how close to doing the right thing they really are,” McDaniels said.

The coaching staff will play to the strengths of the offense, which appear to be underneath routes rather than deep balls. They have a little more than a month, and four preseason games, until the season opener Sept. 13 to figure out what clicks.

“Our job is to do what our guys do best,” offensive coordinator Mike McCoy said. “The coaching staff will determine what we feel will give us the best chance to win.”

Offense progressing

McCoy said he has been pleased with the progress the offense has made during camp.

“I think they’re very comfortable with what we’re doing,” McCoy said. “There’s going to be some days it doesn’t look as good, but we’re comfortable with where we’re at. But we’re not satisfied at all, we have a long way still to go.”

Jordan sued

The Las Vegas Sun reported Broncos running back LaMont Jordan is being sued by the Mirage casino for gambling debts totaling $20,000. The report stated Jordan amassed the debts in June 2008.
