Lamoureux saves Falcons with not a second to spare

NEWS SERIVCES

Nothing like waiting until the last second to avoid a loss.

With the goalie pulled for an extra attacker, Jacques Lamoureux scored off a scramble with six-tenths of a second left in regulation Friday to lift Air Force to a 5-5 overtime tie with Sacred Heart in Milford, Conn.

The Falcons (8-7-3, 6-3-3 Atlantic Hockey Association) trailed 2-1 after the first period and 5-3 after two.

“We were absolutely terrible on our zone,’’ Air Force coach Frank Serratore told SportsAnimal 1300 AM. “Our guys were puck watching. ... We gave up a lot of easy goals.’’

Serratore lifted starting goalie Jason Torf in the second period for Stephen Caple. The two combined for 25 saves.

Fortunately for the Falcons, the Pioneers were shot by the third period. Lamoureux assisted on Derrick Burnett’s goal 4 minutes into the third period, in which Air Force outshot Sacred Heart 17-3.

John Cruse scored twice for the Falcons. Mitchell Stretch got two for the Pioneers, and team captain Patrick Knowlton of Colorado Springs added three assists.

“Tonight we dodged a huge bullet,’’ Serratore said.
