Friday's Broncos training camp at a glance

THE GAZETTE

ENGLEWOOD • After being in full pads for most of the first week of training camp, the Denver Broncos finally got a break.

Although Friday’s practice went about an hour longer than the scheduled 90 minutes, it was in shorts and helmets. With a day off today, the Broncos have a chance to recover a bit.

“This is grueling,” defensive tackle Kenny Peterson said. “Physically demanding, mentally draining — it’s good for us to take these couple days off.”

HIGHLIGHTS AND LOWLIGHTS

Defensive linemen Peterson and Chris Baker each caught punts in a contest to lift curfew on Friday night — Peterson was representing the veterans, while Baker stood in for the rookies. Baker, who is 329 pounds, make a nice catch as he backpedaled. … Spencer Larsen, who has been playing linebacker and fullback, has been lining up deep on kickoff returns as a lead blocker. Larsen made a nice catch on a wayward kickoff.

QUOTABLE

“I think every day they get more and more comfortable. The more reps they get together, the better they’re going to be. But I think they’re fine.” — offensive coordinator Mike McCoy on the chemistry between Denver’s quarterbacks and receivers.

WHAT’S NEXT

The Broncos are off today. They resume camp on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. with a two-hour practice.

FOCUSING ON

Darrell Reid, linebacker. Reid is versatile, and the Broncos will use that to their advantage. He has been with the starters at left outside linebacker in the base defense and has been moving inside to play with his hand down in passing situations.
