Two familiar faces await R.C. Johnson in possibly his last chance for an Olympic berth.
Justin Ruiz is one of the country's most accomplished wrestlers, with a world championships bronze medal, a Pan American Games gold medal and five national titles.
Adam Wheeler has quietly improved in Ruiz's shadow, narrowly missing two world team berths and a pair of national championships since a 2004 World Cup crown.
Johnson, 25, knows what to expect from his Olympic Training Center teammates as the 211.5-pound Greco-Roman underdog entering the U.S. Olympic wrestling trials, which are June 13-15 in Las Vegas.
The trials are the lone qualifier for the Beijing Games in August. The U.S. qualified six of seven weight classes in Greco-Roman and men's freestyle and all four in women's freestyle.
Ruiz won a 4-1, 1-1 decision over Johnson in the 211.5 finals at the U.S. National Championships in April in Las Vegas. Wheeler was third.
"A lot of people will say Justin is the favorite," said Johnson, a University of Colorado at Colorado Springs graduate student. "I don't want to go in as the favorite. I want to go in like everybody else - somebody in the hunt, somebody ready to take that No. 1 spot."
Johnson said he abandoned his mentality of "attack, attack, attack" after a seventh-place finish at the 2004 Olympic trials.
"My wrestling has matured a lot," he said. "In '04, I was a bit more explosive with my wrestling, but I didn't have a lot of maturity to it. You come to realize it's not about attack, attack, attack, It's about attacking at the right moment."
