Tigers disappointed with effort in victory

When the final whistle blew, Colorado College women's soccer players sulked off the field, their shoulders slumped and faces wearing a look of utter dissatisfaction.

Their body language told the story of a loss even though they had just beat Valparaiso 1-0.

Friday's victory pushed the Tigers' record to 2-0 heading into Sunday's match against Idaho State at Stewart Field, but they took it as a cautionary notice.

"The way we came out today just was not inspired," said defender Molly Uyenishi, who headed in Tifiany Brown's corner kick less than 15 minutes into the game. "We need to get a better mentality - go out there every game and give it our best. We didn't do that today."

With the threat of lightning, halftime was extended by 25 minutes.

Valparaiso regrouped and returned to the pitch with greater focus, said coach John Marovich, whose Crusaders dropped to 1-1.

Valparaiso outshot the Tigers 7-3 in the second half, forcing Geneva Sills to make five saves for her first shutout of the season.

"I'm pleased with their response," Valparaiso coach John Marovich said. "We came out with a better commitment and effort and were winning the ball better than in the first half."

Each team had a neargoal in the second half, but Valparaiso was the aggressor.

CC forward Sydney Fetter's shot in the 64th minute beat goalkeeper Mele Cabral of Boulder, ricocheted downward off the crossbar and was cleared out of danger.

Shortly thereafter, Sills miscleared the ball and Valparaiso forward Kendall Brown pounced on the turnover, but her goal was wiped out by offsides.

With about 6 minutes to go, Brown's shot hit the top of the crossbar and teammate Sarah Jewell missed a sure-goal when her rebound attempt deflected off the left post.

"I got lucky on one or two instances," Sills said.
