AFA's Calhoun not upset with Smith

THE GAZETTE

LARAMIE, Wyo. • In his second career start, Air Force senior quarterback Shea Smith didn't put up other-worldly numbers - 16 rushes for 43 yards and a touchdown, 3-for-4 passing for 15 yards and an interception.

But for the second straight week, all that mattered were the numbers on the scoreboard: Air Force 23, Wyoming 3.

"It was good," coach Troy Calhoun said about Smith's poise. "I thought he left some yards on the field, carry-wise, especially in the first half. He had about three carries where there was a pretty good lane in there where we should have been able to gain more.

"And the one decision (Smith's interception) prior to the half where clearly that ball should have been dropped down to the option route underneath. The rest of it was solid."

On the pass picked off by Wyoming's Ward Dobbs, Smith said, "I tried to force it and shouldn't have, and you have to give credit to the linebacker who made a good play. But it's a lesson I've got to learn - to be a little smarter with the football."

Geyer punts for Harrison
Junior Brandon Geyer punted instead of senior Ryan Harrison.

Harrison did not kick in practice Tuesday because of tightness in his groin, so Calhoun decided to take away some of his duties.

"I just wanted to make sure we didn't over-tax him today," Calhoun said.

Geyer averaged 50.3 yards on seven punts.

"It may look like I had a pretty good average, but I could have had a lot more hangtime on my punts," Geyer said.

Battling the wind
Harrison made three field goals (47, 27 and 44 yards), pushing his successful streak to 15 in a row.

War Memorial Stadium is not an easy place to kick because of its swirling winds.

Harrison refused to be bothered.

"You have to have confidence, but you can't be cocky," Harrison said of his mental approach. "You have to know that you're good."

Injuries
Air Force reported two injuries after the game. Left tackle Keith Williams sprained his right ankle and did not finish the game. Receiver Kyle Halderman sprained his right knee but returned.

Harrison school district closer to pay for performance for teachers
Should teacher pay be based on performance?
Yes. Teachers should be rewarded for good work, and poor performers should be weeded out.
No. Pay for performance is just a back-door way of blaming teachers for other problems in the education system.
It depends on what "performance" means. It's good if there's a fair measurement of performance.
Undecided.
