Local connections McCarthy, Headley stay with clubs
The Oakland Athletics have agreed to one-year contracts with right-handers Brandon McCarthy, a Cheyenne Mountain graduate, and Joey Devine, avoiding arbitration.
They were the final two arbitration-eligible players on Oakland’s roster.
McCarthy became a reliable starter after earning the fifth spot in the rotation. He went 9-9 with a 3.32 ERA in 25 starts. He posted career highs in wins, starts, complete games (five), innings pitched (170 2-3) and strikeouts (123). His 123 strikeouts to 25 walks set an A’s record for strikeout-to-walk ratio at 4.92.
Headley, Padres make deal
The San Diego Padres reached a deal with third baseman Chase Headley, 27, a Fountain-Fort Carson graduate, for $3,475,000.
Headley batted a career-high .289 last season with four home runs and 44 RBIs.
